Outdoor Deck Designs

Simple, Casual Style

I know. This is the second post on outdoor deck designs, but I couldn’t help but show you what I found.

This picture does a great job of showing how to seamlessly blend in wood and brick. It was done so well that you can barely notice the difference between the two. This is a simple, easy design to care for and it looks causal and inviting. Well done Arcadia Gardens!

Traditional, Cozy, Welcoming Design

This is my favorite! Its one of the outdoor deck designs that says “welcome home!” From the flowers, to the rug, to the beautiful but cozy furniture, this one is laid out very nicely. Check out the next pic from a different angle.

Modern, Design with Comfortable Feel

I’m not a big fan of “stuffy”, you know, the look that says “don’t sit here” and “never touch that”. And many modern/contemporary themes are designed along those lines. This is totally opposite.

The straight lines and furniture help give it the modern feel, but the accessories and flowers do a great job of making this a casual, chilled out appeal. One of the nicer outdoor deck designs that I’ve seen.

Tranquil, Personal Outdoor Deck Design

Not a lot in terms of accessories here, but this is a simple, beautiful deck. It sits at least 4 feet off the ground and the railing system is awesome! This is a great example of how outdoor deck designs can be clean and inviting.

Creative Use of Space

Love this one! Even though the deck is very wide, the designer did a great job of making it look very inviting. And notice how they built around the tree. Its gives this space a much more personal feeling. Its simple, but has a creative flair to it. Mixing the bricks with the wood was a great idea!

How did I do this time? I hope you’ll be able to look at these outdoor deck designs and come up with a solution for your DIY outdoor deck project. You may not have the actual structure laid out like the pics, but there is plenty of inspiration leaping from the work of these design firms.

Thanks for reading, and as always, leave comments. I like to know what you’re thinking!

Outdoor Deck Design Ideas: 5 Decks to Inspire You

Do you have an outdoor deck? If not, you’re in luck. You get to view these outdoor deck design ideas before you build (as its always easier to start from scratch than to change the actual structure of a deck.)

If you already have a deck in place, you can still read on  There’s plenty of inspiration to go around.

Let’s get inspired!

Rustic and Modern!

This one is really rustic, yet is has a modern look  to it.

I live in Detroit, so there’s no resting on the lake (although we do have a beautiful riverfront)I can, however, see myself using some of the outdoor deck design ideas implemented like the candles, tree stump table and the wood burning stove. What design elements do you like here? What about the overall layout of the deck? I definitely like the built in benches

Simple and Tranquil

Sometimes less is more. Now, this is a pretty large deck, but the design is simple. I like the fact that they used a metal railing system to add the modern touch. Overall, this outdoor deck design is perfect for someone that wants simple and tranquil. What do you think?

Easy Breezy Beautiful Deck Tiles

Deck tiles are really easy to install and have a look of their own! If you have a concrete area that you want to spruce up, this would definitely be the way to go (of course, you could paint the concrete, but that’s a different blog post)

This picture doesn’t do much for accessory design inspiration, but this is definitely one of the outdoor deck design ideas I wanted to show you. Have you seen these before and if not, would you try them? I want to do something like this to my moms yard. She doesn’t have a large space for a deck, but she has a concrete pad that perfect for deck tiles.

Beautiful Stone Deck

I know this isn’t wood, buts this outdoor deck design is really cozy! Some people don’t care for wood decks because of the upkeep involved. I wanted to show an alternative that has just as much style and character as wood.

This is definitely something I would do to my yard if I didn’t already have a wood deck. The layout is pretty functional as well! What do you think?

How did I do? Honestly. Did you see something here that you could see yourself incorporating into your own space? I’d love to hear from you!

Refinishing My Hardwood Floors: Part 1

The upstairs hallway

My house is old.

In 2017, we will celebrate its 100th birthday and while I would love to brag about its pristine condition, I dare not tell a lie!

We’ve been in renovation mode for the past 8 years and have now decided its time to refinish the old hardwood floors on the second floor. Now, if you’ve ever had to fix old hardwood floors, you know what type of challenge I’m in for

The downstairs floors (refinished a few years ago

We completed the first floor a few years ago, and they turned out a lot better than I had hoped, so I’m anticipating pretty good results with this project as well.

So far, we’ve removed the carpet and padding, and the nails and most of the staples. The hardest part was keeping Adam and Eve (our puppies) out of the rubble!

Laminate floors in the master suite

Over the next few days, we will begin sanding and staining the four bedrooms and the hallway. I have to admit, I was pretty tempted to just slap some nice wood laminate flooring down and call it a day. That’s a very easy project and wood laminate flooring is easy to take care of (we actually put it in our “attic-turned-master suite). But at the end of the day, restoration won!

So let the project begin!

I’ll post progress as well as a full step by step guide once its completed.

Have you ever had to fix old hardwood floors? I would love to hear from you!

Wish me luck!

Kids Bedroom Decorating Ideas: Lighting Inspiration

Classic Lighting Design Theme

Thanks to the internet, most kids today don’t do their homework at the kitchen table. They do it in their bedrooms. Because of this, its your job to make sure that the lighting is sufficient, as well as cool.

Adding “special” lighting may be the last thing on your to do list, but its equally important as everything else.

To make it easier on you, here are a few bedroom decorating ideas that pertain specifically to lighting

Cool and Funky Look for Teens or Younger Kids

This cool, funky chandelier would look fabulous in a girls room.  And actually, it could go in a younger girls room or in a teenagers room. The neat part about this piece is that is has so many different colors. It definitely would be easy match this with any type of accessories.

So, is this one of the kids bedroom decorating ideas that you could go with?

Chandeliers design by Etsy

OK, this one really caught my eye.

Its a light, basically made of test tubes. The colorful liquid makes this a perfect fit for a kids room.

It makes a statement and will probably last a while as long as there’s no throwing going on in the room. I could see myself adding this to my 5 year olds space. Truly an interesting kids bedroom decorating idea, don’t ya think?

Sassy, Girlie All the Way

This one reminds me of a Barbie Disco Ball! Its really cute and would accent any girls room. And again, because of the colors, its would be really easy to accessorize and add bedding that matches well. Not a bad kids bedroom decorating idea at all!

Rustic Nautical Theme

This light sort of reminds me of a lighthouse! It has a nautical themed look that would go perfect in a boys room.

String Lighting-Alternative to the Classic Night Light

Last but definitely not least are these cute string lights. They can go around the door frame to create a lighted entrance, or anywhere where your kids just wants to see light. They are perfect for creating nighttime lighting without using a traditional plug in night light. Again, this is a cool kids bedroom decorating idea!

Your Thoughts

What do you think about my pics? I definitely want do do something else on this topic because I found a lot of cool pieces that would work great as unisex lighting. Found some other interesting articles on kids bedroom decorating ideas. Check them out below!

Office Interior Design Ideas

Office Interior Design Ideas for Small Spaces

If your space is small, or if you just get a bit fluxed about decorating your workspace, I feel you! Finding office interior design ideas can be a challenge, especially if you hate the space that you already work in. You want it to be functional and aesthetically pleasing at the same time.

Great Organizational Ideas!

What I like about this space is that it shows you how you can organize your office space without taking away from the personal touch that you want to add. Everything from the storage bins to the wall boards add character to this very small space. This is definitely one of the office interior design ideas I could learn from

Large Office Interior Design Ideas

Ok, if you’ve got an entire room that you can dedicate to your office space, you may want to look at a design that offers lots of storage and “wiggle room”. This is one of the more simple office interior design ideas that I’ve ran across, and yet it makes a big statement. Professional, organized and ready to work! I like it.

I want to sit in this room and create a fashion magazine cover!

This space has “The Devil Wears Prada” written all over it. Its another great design idea for people with an entire room to dedicate to their office space. Looking closely, it wouldn’t be too hard to duplicate this look. How about it? Would you try it?

 Where Do I Start?

I LOVE this space! It has the creative feel that makes you want to sit down and get to work. The elements of the office design that I think are really fun and unique includes the chair and the rug. I could also see this as something that could be done without professional help, (as long as you know how to hang cabinets)

Wrap Up

There are soo many different ways to approach your workspace design. These are only a fraction of the office interior design ideas that I ran across when writing this post. Because there are so many, I will do another one of these soon. I also want to show some of the accessories that you can use in your space as well!

Comments, comments comments! And share your pics with me as well. As soon as we get a few, I’ll create a page to share them with everyone!

Thanks for stopping by!

Teenage Bedroom Decorating Ideas

Whether your teen is just hitting the teens or on their way to college, you can’t help but notice that they have acquired their own style J

It can be hard at times to come up with teenage bedroom decorating ideas to make your young adult happy, especially if you’re not hip to what teens want to see in their rooms. Nowadays , its more about the personalization of the space, and less about the lava lamps and overall “grooviness” of the room.

Here are a few teenage bedroom decorating ideas that you can use to inspire you to help your youngster redesign their space!

This teenage room design works in all the right ways (and that bed looks really comfy!) The lighting and the art over the bed have a personal feel and definitely makes a statement about the person sleeping in there.

The flamingos on this cover look really neat! If I weren’t married, I would probably have this cover on my bed! Pink and orange are really cute colors to put together

This is one of the best teenage bedroom decorating ideas that I’ve seen that incorporates bunk beds. Now, you wont be able to fit this design style into a dorm room, but its perfect to try at home. And because the colors are so neutral, it would work for a teen boy or girl.

Great room design for your young man, and it almost has a retro feel to it that gives it a more mature look! My son would have this room tore up in a week!

While we’re on the subject of teen decorating, check out these great reads from across the web! Let me know what you think of the pics I selected. I see a few things I want to try already!

That’s my small take on teenage bedroom decorating ideas!

Wall Decal Designs:Add Character to Your Bedroom with a Wall Decal

Decorating your bedroom walls can be a hassle, especially if you have to paint the room a different color. There are other ways to add style to the room without the use of paint, drop cloths and rollers. A wall decal could be the answer to your bedroom wall decorating needs, and they are fun and easy to apply!

Analyze the Design Theme and the Wall Space

The first thing you should do before you even think about ordering a wall decal is figure out where you want to put it. Take a look around the room and see what wall space is available. You may have a few outdated pictures that you would gladly remove to open up a bit of space. Also, look at the other items in the bedroom. What design style are they? If you have a traditional space, you should carry that design theme with your wall decal. Modern, contemporary rooms are great places to add spice with wall stickers.

Measure the Wall Space

After you decide where to put your bedroom wall decal, the next thing you will need to do is measure the space. Decals come in many different sizes, and you want the wall sticker to be proportionate with the wall itself. Some people actually order their decals to cover an entire wall! The choices in terms of size are endless. You just need to measure first.

Quotes or Pictures?

Do you have a favorite saying? Perhaps you would want to see it on the wall instead of a picture. Your decal should represent your distinguished style and taste. There are no wrong or right choices when it comes to decorating your personal space. Quotes and sayings offer a very personal feeling to any area and are wildly popular in bedroom interior designs.

Kids Wall Decals

When using a wall decal in a kid’s room, you should stick with the same design principals. Make sure the decal fits the overall style of the room and try to include the child in the design process as much as possible. Let them pick the decals (with your guidance) and allow them to place them on the walls. The cool thing about wall stickers is that they can be removed and replaced in an instant. Any kid would love to decorate their bedroom with kids wall decals,

By taking a few minutes to analyze and measure your bedroom, you can certainly create a space that belongs to you and only you! A wall decal is the perfect way to change the look of any space without breaking the bank or getting paint all over the place. They are super easy to apply and fun to customize!

So, when are you going to dress up those boring bedroom walls with a fun wall decal?

Interior Paint Color Ideas: Is Black the Color for You?

I got a phone call from a friend a yesterday and she wanted to know if she should paint a room black.

I told her that there are certainly some spaces where black would be appropriate (like a home theater room) and that she should paint the room whatever color she wanted to. After listening to her go back and forth about her decision, I told her that I would find some pics of black rooms so that she would have a better idea of what types of design themes she should go with. I have them posted here for your review as well.

After talking with her, I felt compelled to let people know that there is no right or wrong interior paint color idea. You can and should paint the room in the colors that you like. Once you do that, then the decorating and designing of the individual space should occur. There are colorful accessories that will make any room shine no matter how dark or light it is.

Image via homeedit.com

So, let’s be clear. It’s your house and you should do whatever you like. Now, with that being said, I also feel inclined to tell you that you may have a hell of a time painting a light color over the black paint if you decide to change the color. But even that’s a small issue, as there are many different commercial primers available at Home Depot and other home improvement stores that will do the job just fine. Also, you may want to have a black accent wall instead of painting the entire room black (I also mentioned this to my friend) Accent walls add bursts of color without taking away from the other elements in the space.

Whatever you decide, I would love to see pics so please send them to [email protected]

Ethnic Home Decorations

You Can Design an Ethnic Room!

I know a lot of people that want to furnish their homes with ethnic interior décor, but they just don’t know how. If you’re of any other ethnicity other than the one you’re trying to capture in your space, I can totally see how that becomes a problem!

I was asked in particular about African inspired home décor, so I will focus on that in this post. Ethnic home decorations are easy to find and most stores carry them. Now, depending on how much you want to inject that particular theme into your room, you could go with several choices.

African inspired artifacts are a great way to add ethnic interior décor into your space. These types of items can be found online, or in a department store. Now, of course, if you purchase them this way you must know that they are “inspired” and not real.

Swap meets and craft fairs also have a fair share of ethnic home decorations. Many of the people that run these stands are actually from Africa and other foreign countries. Their work is normally exceptional, and the colors and always fabulous.

Wall Décor

Some stores (and flea markets) carry wall décor that looks really authentic and gives the room a real ethnic feel.

You should try to select various different types of wall décor, not just pictures. This will make the room more interesting and help you avoid the “cluttered” look.

Whether you decide to use small figurines or large pieces for decoration, make sure the ethnic interior theme is carried throughout the room. Some people try to mix different themes and it ends up looking like a circus. If you want an African inspired room, stick with products that are of that nature. You will have a much better chance of achieving the look you want this way than if you just threw all sorts of pieces together.

Select your design accessories carefully, and remember that you have access to some really great ethnic home decorations right here through The $20 Gift Company!

Kitchen Cabinet Refacing: Why You Should Try It

If your kitchen is ugly, then you more than likely need to update it.

This can be accomplished with kitchen cabinet refacing. Now, I know the job sounds difficult, but it really requires more of your time that is does skill.

If you want to know whether or not you’re a good candidate, I’m going to send you here to check out the page on kitchen cabinet refacing. This blog post is strictly to tell you why you should try it.

Save Thousands of Dollars

First off, refacing instead of replacing your kitchen cabinets will save you thousands of dollars. The extra money can be spent on updating the floors, counters, backsplash or some other ugly area in your kitchen. You could also use the money to buy much needed accessories (like organizers for those messy kitchen drawers)

Painting Your Cabinets is Fun

The second reason you should try kitchen cabinet refacing is because it’s fun! Now, if you’re the person that doesn’t like painting or for some reason your hands shake, don’t do this. But for everyone else, definitely give it a go! The only thing you need to remember is that you should paint in the same direction as the grain of the wood. You will also enjoy creating and having an active hand in your home improvement projects. When friends visit, you can show off your skillz (yes, I said skillz) and be proud of your accomplishments.

Lots of Experience

As a homeowner, you need DIY experience! Kitchen cabinet refacing is a great project to get your feet wet in designing and remodeling without having to pull out the heavy duty power tools (although you may want to use an electric drill to remove the cabinets from the hinges and to remove the hardware from the cabinets) As you began to tackle these types of projects on your own, you will feel more empowered to finish other areas of the house.

Ask the Pros

I know I made this sound easy, but trust me, it is. Time, patience and a steady hand are all that you really need for a kitchen cabinet refacing project (and good weather so you can let the cabinet doors dry outside.) We have a page that gets a bit more into detail on this subject and I suggest that you visit it. Also, visit your local Home Depot (I recommend them because that’s where I shop for all my DIY supplies) and ask the sales reps about how to handle the project. They are always helpful and give great advice!

As always, I would love to check out your project. Please send before, during and after pics of your progress and I will post them on the site.  You can email them to [email protected]
